Festival of the Moving Image

Poster
11″ x 17″

Client: Broadcast Electronic Media Arts Department at CCSF

The festival’s theme, “Now or Never,” was described as an urgent call to action to be bold and creative during these increasingly precarious times. The client also stressed that although the event has historically been of the “moving image,” there would be a larger selection of audio entries this round, so the representation of that medium was greatly encouraged.

Instead of using common symbols of time (clock, hourglass, film strip) I focused on the more visceral timepiece that each person has and must include in their artistic toolbox: their heart. Grand scale illustrations, high contrast colors, and interplay between objects reflect the important urgency of the theme while an RGB palette keeps it in the realm of light and screen. The camera and mic were illustrated by me with the heart being sourced.

The Univers family provides confident utility in type to support the busy imagery. A variety of condensed and extended styles build further movement within the detail text, particularly the expanding and contracting movement of a beating heart.
